In my research, I am interested in exploring the potential of seaweeds as a sustainable protein source in the context of the expected global population increase and existing challenges within food production. Through my research, I aim to optimize seaweed cultivations to produce seaweeds with enhanced growth rates and biochemical composition.
Seaweeds are known to grow faster and accumulate nutrients when cultivated in nutrient-rich waters. One way to enhance the biochemical composition of the seaweeds could therefore be to integrate seaweed cultivation with industries that produce nutrient-rich process waters. In my research, I investigate the potential of integrating these nutrient-rich waters with seaweed cultivation and how this can create a circular system where the nutrients are not wasted but used to produce sustainable protein-rich biomass of seaweeds.
