Project description
In my project, I am interested in what it means to convert a theater play to a libretto at the text level. To this end, I have chosen the French play Le Barbier de Séville (1775) by Beaumarchais and the librettos of two of the most famous Italian operas based on this play: Il Barbiere di Siviglia (1782) by Paisiello and Il Barbiere di Siviglia (1816) by Rossini.
In addition to studying these revisions as adaptations, based on adaptation theories, I also want to apply a translation perspective on the processes in order to explore any translation-related problems and other issues. I find this second part of the project interesting especially considering that the source text and the target texts are written in two Romance languages sharing many linguistic and cultural aspects.
