About Monica Sand
Research advisor, Artist and Affiliated Researcher at the Academy of Music and Drama:
As a Research Advisor at the Artistic Faculty, my task is to contribute to research environments and research-based education by implementing quality-promoting processes in strategies and policy documents, mainly through the Faculty Research Board, KF BUFF, which includes the department's vice-prefects for research and research education.
Research: Between 2019-2024 my research focuses on the new building Konstnärliga at Götaplatsen 2028 in Gothenburg and the transforming role of the Artistic Faculty within the university and as part of the public space.
Allmänningen/the Common Room in collaboration with Onkar Kular, professor of design at HDK-Valand, a research project funded by Vinnova 2019-2021. In the new building Konstnärliga to be completed 2028, Allmänningen/the Common Room will serve as an experimental platform for knowledge exchange between academia and the public, where new ideas and methods of the future city can be developed and tested: http://www.onkarkular.com/index.php?/publications/allmaenningenthe-common-room/
Flickläroverket: Between 2022 and 2024, I initiated two days of performative memory rituals held in December 2022 in the formerFlickläroverket (Gothenburg's first public higher education for girls) built 1935, since 1992 part of Artisten, and demolished in the beginning of 2023. The project, financed by Anna Ahrenberg's fund, is an example of knowledge exchange between research, art and the public: https://playingthespace.wordpress.com/2023/12/18/en-bage-genom-tiden/
Background: My research interest as an artist, researcher, teacher and research leader evolve around urban public relations, art in urban planning and democratic participation. My thesis at the School of Architecture, KTH, started off with an experiment with a 43 meter high swing under the Älvsborgs-bridge in the harbour of Gothenburg: Konsten att gunga. Experiment som aktiverar mellanrum (Space in Motion. The Art of Activating Spaces In-Between) Axlbooks 2008.
In my postdoc 2009-2011 at Konstfack, Get lost with punctuality and precision, funded by the Swedish Research Council, I engaged students, researchers and artists in collective urban interventions.
As researcher and research manager at ArkDes, the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design, I initiated and ran artistic research projects with a focus on public space (2011-2019) that became part of exhibitions, public walks and lectures.
