About Stefan Johansson

I am associate professor in education at the Department of Education and Special Education, UGOT, since 2019.

My research interests center on several different topics in educational research. I currently work on a project supported by the Swedish research council where we investigate the effects of formal teacher competence on student achievement. In this project we also explore how teacher competence is distributed in schools with differing social background. Data sources come mainly from large-scale surveys and register databases and I am particularly interested in questionnaire design. Since 2020, I am a member of the group that develops the questionnaires for the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) which asks teachers and school leaders about working conditions and learning environments at their schools.

Another strand of research focus on the results of international large-scale assessments, such as TIMSS and PISA. In a recent project funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond we explore Sweden's results in PISA 2018. More specifically, we investigate whether the PISA sample is representative for the whole population and whether students’ test-scores translate into their national test results and grades. Furthermore, I am involved in projects investigating the consequences of school failure and what factors that can promote successful schooling.

I supervise at bachelor, master and doctoral level. I teach in courses on educational assessment, evaluation and quality in measurement, and in statistics courses using SPSS, for example.
