The total defence
In a time marked by uncertainty and rapidly changing global conditions, the need for deepened knowledge and strategic preparedness is intensifying. As part of our societal mission, the University of Gothenburg is launching the educational initiative Critical Situation, with the aim of contributing to strengthening Sweden's resilience in times of unrest, armed conflict, and war. Through a knowledge-driven approach, we gather academic expertise to equip society with critical skills and insights.
Critical Situation
– an educational initiative with the aim of contributing to strengthening Sweden's resilience
Critical Situation is a contract education that consists of a series of courses that address central challenges in a changed world order, where the role of digitalization is crucial both as an enabler and a vulnerability factor. Digital technology creates new conditions for societal organization and security but also introduces increased risks related to cyber threats, disinformation, and dependencies on digital infrastructure. The courses build on existing academic courses that have been adapted to meet the specific questions and problems arising in times of crisis and conflict.
We offer the following courses:
• Digital Resilience and Cybersecurity
• Disinformation
• Digital Innovation in Times of Unrest
• Organising in a digital society in times of instability and conflict
Flexible Teaching Formats
To meet different prerequisites and needs, the courses are offered through flexible and modern teaching formats. Participants can engage in courses in several different ways, including:
• Campus-based lectures and seminars for in-depth discussion and interactive learning.
• Digital activities and workshops for increased accessibility and participation regardless of geographic location.
• Asynchronous learning activities that allow participants to study at their own pace and adapt learning to individual needs.
Target Audience
Critical Situation is aimed at decision-makers, government officials, business leaders, academics, and other societal actors who want to understand, manage, and counter the threats and challenges that arise in times of risk for war. We welcome collaboration with both public and private actors to collectively build capacity and preparedness in times of uncertainty.
The University of Gothenburg contributes, in this critical situation, with education based on scientific research and practical application. Welcome to participate in Critical Situation — to create a more resilient society able to meet uncertain times.
