The Fifth Sahlgrenska as a Medical Media System
*The Fifth Sahlgrenska as a Medical Media System* is a scholarly monograph published by Makadam. The book examines Sahlgrenska Hospital as a media system during the period 1933–1959. This era was marked by a major expansion of the hospital complex in Änggården, which was contemporaneously referred to as 'The Fifth Sahlgrenska'.
The Fifth Sahlgrenska as a Medical Media System is a scholarly monograph published by Makadam, mapping how various media such as film, photography, magic lantern imagery, publications, and audio recordings were utilised, with a particular focus on three key individuals: hospital director and politician Hugo Höglund, head surgeon and hospital manager Sven Johansson, and nurse and museum founder Ingeborg Kastman.
The main author is Mattias Bäckström, Associate Professor of History of Ideas and Science and Senior Lecturer in Cultural Heritage Management at NTNU in Trondheim. Co-authors include Robert Wallsson, educator at the Museum of Medical History, and Lisa Sputnes Mouwitz, museum director.
About Mediated Medicine
The monograph The Fifth Sahlgrenska as a Medical Media System: Media Usage in the Administrative, Clinical, and Museum Practices of Gothenburg's Hospital Complex, 1933–1959 was published in september 2024 by Makadam.
The publication is the result of years of research conducted at NTNU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, and the Museum of Medical History, as part of the research project Mediated Medicine at GPS400: The Centre for Collaborative Visual Research at the University of Gothenburg. The project is funded by the IngaBritt and Arne Lundberg Research Foundation and other participating partners.
The Medical History Museum hosted an evening program that took place between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, featuring a series of presentations and discussions.
Museum director Lisa Sputnes Mouwitz opened the evening with a warm welcome and a few words about the project. Following this, Mats Jönsson, professor of film studies and head of GPS400 at the University of Gothenburg, provided an insight into the work on Mediated Medicine and GPS400.
Mattias Bäckström, associate professor at NTNU in Trondheim, continued with a presentation on The Fifth Sahlgrenska as a Medical Media System sharing insights into the roles, results, and challenges within the cross-sector collaboration between the museum and university sectors during the years 2019–2024.
Robert Wallsson, educator, concluded with a presentation on the hospital administration's photo archive and the digitisation process of the material.
