Decolonizing museums

Can objects in museums be used to heal social relationships that have been broken?

Museums are struggling with the fact that many of their objects were collected in the colonial period. Decolonization is often the label under which this reckoning is carried out. But what does decolonization mean in practice?

To discuss this, we have invited Raymond Peroti, a hip-hop artist and film maker. His multifaceted work challenges the mental boundaries between histories, identities and cultures of Sweden, the Caribbean, and the wider world. We also have with us today Nanette Snoep, an anthropologist, curator, and Director of Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne. She is a central player in reshaping the way we envision the future of museums. Today’s moderator is Michael Barrett, curator at the National Museums of World Culture.

In cooperation with Goethe-Institut Schweden and French Institute in Sweden, supported by the Franco-German Cultural Fund.

Ukrainas kulturarv i krigstider (in Swedish)

In all ages, war has meant that cultural heritage has been lost.

At the same time, people have tried in various ways to protect their cultural heritage from destruction, looting and illegal trade - from burying it, or hiding it in "safe places", to today making digital copies.

Today we are going to talk about why it is important to talk about cultural heritage in the midst of a burning war, but also how cultural heritage can be important in the reconstruction process after a war.

Moderator: Helen Arfvidsson. Guests: Anna-Karin Johansson, Generalsekreterare, Svenska Unescorådet and Fedir Androshchuk, Director General of The National Museum of the History of Ukraine.

Sound producer: Niklas Sjösvärd.

Kulturarv och identitet i kristider (in Swedish)

Cultural heritage is so much more than stuff in museums, archaeological remains or churches. Memories, feelings of belonging or exclusion, history, traditions are linked to cultural heritage. In times of crisis, in flight or during natural disasters, cultural heritage can seem unimportant when struggling to survive the day. But when it's time to recreate your everyday life or find your place in a new society, cultural heritage plays an extremely important role. Inside the Box is hosted by Khazar Fatemi, journalist, and Jonathan Westin, researcher, who talk about this. The conversation is led by Maria Dahlström, curator at the Museums of World Culture in Sweden with special responsibility for issues of threatened cultural heritage.

Sound producer: Niklas Sjösvärd. Producers: Jenny Högström Berntson och Rebecka Bergström.
