Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No 5
Four notes are the starting point for one of the greatest innovations in Western music: Beethoven's Fifth, or the Fate Symphony, premiered in Vienna in 1808. It divides time into a before and an after. From this simple but iconic riff, an entire symphony emerges. Like fractals or nature's own patterns, a musical macrocosm emerges from a micro-ditto.
Few classical pieces have made such an impact on contemporary popular culture: in Disney's Fantasia 2000, in the film Breakfast Club, disco-fied in Saturday Night Fever, and so on. During the Second World War, that four-tone theme served as a signature for the BBC. And coincidentally, the Morse code for the letter V – as in victory – is three short notes and one long note (di-di-di-dah), which happens to be the opening motif of the symphony in question – a piece about struggle and victory – which also happens to be symphony number five, that is, V according to the Roman counting system.
André Jolivet: Flute Concerto
The Flute Concerto, composed in 1949, is characterised by melodic curiosity and is technically demanding without being unnecessarily complicated. It draws inspiration from ancient and non-European themes. The concert is characterised by Jolivet's interest in mysticism and primitivism, creating a unique combination of rhythmic complexity and melodic freedom.
Helena Munktell: Bränningar
This orchestral work, composed in 1893, paints dramatic seascapes. With its rich instrumentation and dynamic contrasts, the piece captures the movement of the waves, from calm to storm. It reflects Munktell's skill and ability to portray the power of nature in music.
