Heritage Academy's spring conference: the role of activism in museums and research
Activism in the museum sector and academic research is a topic that evokes strong emotions. This conference aims to explore the multifaceted nature of activism, examining its definition, consequences and necessity (?) for driving social change.
We will discuss whether activism is problematic or necessary, the role of museums and researchers as agents of change and the connection between activism and cultural heritage "from below".
The aim of the day is:
- to promote a nuanced understanding of activism within the museum sector and research
- to offer a platform to discuss the ethical and practical implications of activism
- to highlight the potential of museums and research as catalysts for social change
The conference will include a keynote and some shorter lectures with examples of activism within academia and the museum sector and will conclude with a panel discussion.

The conference is organized by the Heritage Academy. The Heritage Academy is a platform for collaboration between the University of Gothenburg and various heritage institutions in the Västra Götaland region. The spring conference is one of the Heritage Academy's annual events.
