Activism in the museum sector and academic research is a topic that evokes strong emotions. This conference aims to explore the multifaceted nature of activism, examining its definition, consequences and necessity (?) for driving social change.

The conference is aimed at museum professionals, researchers, students, cultural heritage practitioners and anyone interested in the interaction between activism, research, museum activities and social change.

We will discuss whether activism is problematic or necessary, the role of museums and researchers as agents of change and the connection between activism and cultural heritage "from below".

The aim of the day is:

  • to promote a nuanced understanding of activism within the museum sector and research
  • to offer a platform to discuss the ethical and practical implications of activism
  • to highlight the potential of museums and research as catalysts for social change

The conference will include a keynote and some shorter lectures with examples of activism within academia and the museum sector and will conclude with a panel discussion.
