Alternative facilities during building process

The University of Gothenburg and Akademiska Hus are planning a new building for the Artistic Faculty, that will be constructed 2023–2027 in the Näckrosen university campus area. The new building is called Konstnärliga and will house both HDK-Valand and the Academy of Music and Drama. During the construction period, the Academy of Music and Drama needs to move to temporary premises.

The Artisten building, which has been home to the Academy of Music and Drama, will be rebuilt and enlarged. The faculty's new building, called Konstnärliga, is scheduled for completion in 2027, with the move-in expected to take place in stages from 2024-2027.
A new building for the Artistic Faculty

During construction it will not be possible to study in the premises behind Götaplatsen. We have therefore moved to replacement premises for the next few years. As a student at the Academy of Music and Drama, you will of course receive a high-quality education during this period. Until Konstnärliga is ready for moving in, the Academy of Music and Drama has its main residence at Eklandagatan 86 in Johanneberg, where the premises have been adapted for our activities.

Some of the programmes move to other premises in Gothenburg, always in the vicinity of other professional institutions in their artistic field. Find information about the different locations on this page.

The academy's main building is located about a 15-minute walk from Götaplatsen. For most people who study at the Academy of Music and Drama, this is the place for classes and to meet other students. The premises have been rebuilt to suit our educations. Here you find rehearsal rooms, dance rooms, ensemble halls, sound studios, percussion rooms and a concert hall for electrically amplified music.

Of course you can prepare your lunch on site, and there are several eateries nearby. If you like to exercise you will enjoy the proximity to two of Fysiken's gym facilities.

Parts of our educations in music and sound production, composition and the individual performance programme take place here. Brewhouse is a creative centre in the Gårda district in Gothenburg, which since its inception in 2004 has been a place where creativity, artistry and entrepreneurship can meet and grow.

Inside Brewhouse's yellow brick factory facades, in the Apotekarnes' water factory from 1936, the old bottling hall has been transformed into an event arena for concerts, fairs and conferences. There are also music studios, offices and incubator operations for start-ups in the creative industries, as well as a restaurant.

Parts of our educations in performing arts are located in this building from 1869. Under the same roof - and in another building across the Vasagatan boulevard - you will find our sister institution HDK-Valand. In addition to teaching rooms, the premises contain studio spaces, several well-equipped workshops, two student-run galleries and equipment for film, sound and photography among other things.

Triörgatan 1 (Andra stället)

In this building, named "The other place", the educations in performing arts carry out parts of their activities. The building is over 1000 square meters and consists mostly of a large blackbox adapted for theatre productions. It is adjacent to Angered Theatre and theatre school as well as the cultural centre Blå Stället.

Andra stället has been used periodically by Angered Theatre both as a stage for performances and as a rehearsal room. It has also been used by the youth centre Kulturatom, a tailor, Clandestino Institut, Teater Chill, the dance school Funky Kids, Kulturskolan among other activities. Between 2016 and 2019, the Angereds Folkhögskola and the acting school Angereds Teaterskola were located to these premises.

Nearby, there are walking paths and unique nature around the Lärjeån creek. There are also many eateries and cafes, Kultur på burk, the Lärjeån's gardens as well as a good vegetable market.

Collaborations

The Academy of Music and Drama collaborates with a number of cultural institutions, venues and churches in the Gothenburg area, where students rehearse and make public appearances. Here is a selection.

Örgryte new church

A large church in neo-Gothic style, completed in 1890. It houses the North German Baroque organ, a new build realized as a research project within the framework of the Göteborg Organ Art Center (GOArt). The aim was to create a 17th century organ in the spirit of Arp Schnitger. The church also houses the British Willis organ from the late 19th century. Students from the programmes in church music and in organ and related keyboard instruments will carry out part of their training here.

The Gothenburg Concert Hall

Located at Götaplatsen, this funktionalist pearl is the home of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. As a student on the master's programme in Symphonic Orchestra Performance, you will perform in concerts here. Students from the bachelor's programme in Classical Performance and the freestanding courses in Interpretation may also perform in concerts here.

The auditorium is located in the University of Gothenburg's main building in Vasaparken. Students on the master's programme in Symphonic Orchestra Performance will participate in orchestra rehearsals in this room. Students from the bachelor's programme in Classical Performance and the freestanding courses in Interpretation may also participate in rehearsals here.

Article from the GU Journal

In the spring of 2023, the auditorium of the university's main building will be the rehearsal space for the University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, among others. This also means that some of the Academy of Music and Drama's traditional lunchtime concerts will move to Vasaparken.

May we serve a concert for lunch?
