Blue Community Garden on display at Design Museum

Published

A model of the blue community Garden Flytevi is part of the new permanent exhibition Design Stories at the Röhsska Museum of Design and Craft.

Flytevi is built as a future prototype in collaboration between the City of Gothenburg and the University of Gothenburg. On site in Frihamnen in central Gothenburg, visitors can learn more about small-scale farming and food from the sea. A model showing what it looks like under the water around the allotment is now on display at the Röhsska Museum.

"We are very pleased that Flytevi will be part of the Röhsska Museum's new permanent exhibition. Thanks to our collaboration with the City of Gothenburg, we have been able to be seen in completely different contexts than we usually do," says Maria Bodin, project manager at the Centre for Sea and Society at the University of Gothenburg.

Over 500 design artefacts

In total, over 500 design artefacts from the last 150 years are on display in the exhibition Design Stories. Flytevi is part of the Belonging theme, which focuses on the accessibility of public spaces and who shapes our cities.
"Flytevi shows how we can utilise water in urban planning and how it can be part of the green transition," says Maria Bodin.

Mussels and seaweed

A blue community garden can be compared to an allotment on land, but instead of carrots and potatoes, mussels and seaweed are grown.

Since its inauguration in 2022, the allotment has been showcased on several occasions, including during Gothenburg's 400th anniversary and at the New European Bauhaus exhibition in Brussels. Also organised on the allotment are classes, where pupils can try out being a sea farmer for a day.

"One of the aims of the project is to showcase an easy way to grow your own food and increase interest in seaweed and mussels as a sustainable source of protein", says Maria Bodin.
