"It is fantastic that we have been entrusted to run the centre for another four years. We have so much exciting research and collaboration with other universities, policymakers, and over 50 external partners, which we can now fully pursue," says Kristina Snuttan Sundell, Professor at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, as well as chair for Blue Food.

The Formas funding allows for a significant co-financing from the centre’s partners and other financiers, totalling 18 million SEK.

Focus on health, AI, and regulations

An international expert panel has reviewed the project's progress and is pleased with the results achieved so far, as well as the plans for the coming four years. During this period, the research will expand with a focus on health, AI and digitalisation, economic analyses, and legal frameworks.

The University of Gothenburg will increase its research in design and social sciences, focusing on consumer behaviour, economic analysis, and regulations.

"Understanding these areas is crucial to paving the way for Blue Food's vision—an increased sustainable production and consumption of Swedish seafood, which in turn aims to improve public health and food security. We will also continue our natural science research with external partners, focusing on sustainable production systems and feed, linked to the increased use of AI and digitalisation," Kristina Snuttan Sundell concludes.
