Erik Smedler new member in The Young Academy of Sweden

A third WCMTM Fellow is now part of The Young Academy of Sweden. Erik Smedler recently joined the Academy, where also Johan Zelano and Michael Schöll are active members.

The academy is independent and interdisciplinary, and brings together a selection of the most prominent younger researchers in Sweden.

“The Young Academy of Sweden is a strong voice in the research policy debate, and I am looking forward to highlighting the importance of clinical aspects when it comes to research on psychiatric disease,” said Erik, who is Associate professor and medical doctor in molecular psychiatry at the University of Gothenburg.

Molecular research for patient benefit

Erik also added that there are great opportunities in the coming years to use results from large-scale genetical studies to increase our understanding of psychiatric disease.

”This is important from my perspective; with increased knowledge of these mechanisms, we have the chance to use molecular research to benefit patients.”

WCMTM offers a wide network

Considering that Erik is also fellow within the WCMTM, a wide network of researchers within the molecular and translational field is open to him, both locally and nationally.

“These networks are very important for both receiving input on what policies we need to work on and what the research community is interested in, while also reaching out with decisions and information. One question that I am involved in currently is the handling of overhead costs that follow grants like the ERC,” Erik said.
