Filmens Göteborg - a book about local film in archives and museum collections

The new publication Filmens Göteborg is the result of a research project in which researchers from GPS400 collaborated with the cultural heritage institutions Museum of Gothenburg, the Swedish National Archives in Gothenburg, the Medical History Museum and Bohuslän's Museum. The project is focused on film which constitutes a unique and largely unused cultural heritage and historical source material. The book does not claim to tell the definitive story of film in Gothenburg during the 20th century but rather focus on telling the project's process and result.

Using different perspectives, fields and competencies, the chapters of the book contains descriptions, in-depth studies and examples from the research project. Thus, it conveys the film's role in understanding local identity, history and cultural heritage. It can also act as a support for those who plan to enter into a similar project, with a focus on a rewarding collaboration between researchers, museums and archives.

In the book we can for example read about a filmic documentation of the construction of the Älvsborg Bridge during the 1960s, journal films from the first decades of the 20th century, films that highlight Gothenburg's important medical history and a documentary about Östra Nordstan before the neighbourhood was demolished in the 1960s.
