Hanna Stjärne Appointed New Chair of the University of Gothenburg

Hanna Stjärne will be the new Chair of the Board of the University of Gothenburg. The government made this decision on 12 September. In addition to Stjärne’s appointment, the board will also gain three new members, while three current members will retain their positions.

Hanna Stjärne is a journalist with extensive experience in the media sector, including serving as a member of the jury for the prestigious Stora Journalistpriset (Great Journalist Award). She has also been CEO of the UNT Group, which includes the newspaper *Upsala Nya Tidning*. Since January 2015, she has held the position of CEO of Sveriges Television (SVT).

She will leave this position at the end of the year to assume the role of CEO of the Nobel Foundation on 1 January 2025. This means that she will be able to formally take up the position of Chair from this date. In the interim period, from 1 October to 31 December 2024, the current Vice Chair, Ann-Sofi Lodin, will serve as Chair.

Three New Members

The new board will also include the following three new members:

  • Björn Stensaker, Professor and Vice Vice-chancellor for Education at the University of Oslo, an expert in reforms and change processes within higher education.
  • Göran von Sydow, Political Scientist and Director of the Swedish Institute for European Policy Studies (Sieps), a government agency tasked with analysing EU developments and Swedish European policy.
  • Nils Öberg, PhD in Political Science and Director-General of the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan).

The new board’s term of office will run from 1 October 2024 to 30 April 2028.

Four members from the current board will remain: Maja Fjaestad, Johan Hyllner, Ann-Sofi Lodin, and Lisbeth Schultze.

  • Chair: Hanna Stjärne (taking office 1 January 2025, with Ann-Sofi Lodin serving as Chair until then)
  • New members: Björn Stensaker, Göran von Sydow, and Nils Öberg
  • Continuing member: Maja Fjaestad, Johan Hyllner, Ann-Sofi Lodin, and Lisbeth Schultze

The board also includes representatives of the faculty and students, and trade unions have the right to voice their opinions.
