Here Are the Winners of the 2024 Business Simulation Game

During an intense week, first-year students in the Bachelor's Programme in Business and Economics had the opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge of business administration into practice. The business simulation game 'The Blue Connection' was an educational experience for the students, as shared by the School of Business, Economics, and Law at the University of Gothenburg.

In the 'The Blue Connection' business game, students were tasked with transforming a company from a traditional business model to a more sustainable and circular one. This year marked the first time that students from the School’s newly launched English-language Bachelor's Programme in Business and Economics participated in the game. Dian Mamiranian and his team were the first ever to win the competition.

This business game was an amazing experience

– I am really looking forward to getting out into the real world and working. This business game was an amazing experience. If the real world is anything like the game, I just want to get out there and start," says Dian Mamiranian, a student in the Bachelor's Programme in Business and Economics.

Throughout the game, regular check-ins were conducted within the subgroups and collective instructions were provided for the entire group. Students competed in teams of four to achieve the highest possible profit.

Want to be able to start a business one day

For the first-year students in the Swedish-language Bachelor's Programme in Business and Economics, two teams emerged as winners this year. One of these teams included Viggo Öhrn and his peers, who are pleased with their victory.

– Whether we had won or not, I would still have taken away so much from this week. It gave us the opportunity to practice business administration in a practical setting, says Viggo Öhrn.

– We are in this program for a reason, and in our group, we are interested in economics and we want to run businesses one day and make good financial decisions. This was an exemplary model to see how well we can adapt and make changes, says Viggo Öhrn.

A team of only two

Unlike some other games on the market, success in The Blue Connection is closely linked to a sustainability index. To generate significant profit, students had to consider their company's sustainability impact. Working with circularity was something all winning teams felt they managed well.

However, it hasn't been all smooth sailing during the game. All the students worked hard. Teo Bernard Haukur Jóhansson and Petter Nilsson were only a team of two.

– It has been very intense, I must say. We have been quite obsessed with this game, but we feel great joy that it went so well, says Teo Bernard Haukur Jóhansson, from the Swedish-language Bachelor's Programme in Business and Economics.
