New professor of informatics wants to save the common welfare

Johan Magnusson is a newly appointed professor of informatics. His research concerns the public sector and how our municipalities, regions and government agencies can use digitalization to add as much benefit as possible to the citizens.

Me and my colleagues' research has a direct impact on both the public organizations we study and the national level through policy. We conduct clinical research that is designed to have a direct impact with the aim of saving the welfare system, says Johan Magnusson.

These include cost-effective, smart, and functional digital solutions for building permits, school platforms and income support. Services and functions in society aimed at citizens which are paid for by tax money, but which in several cases do not work optimally.

“Digital maturity in the public sector”

To get an overview of how the public sector handles challenges with digital transformation, Johan Magnusson and his colleagues release a status report onDigital maturity in the public sector (Digital mognad i offentlig sektor) every year.

In the reports, the researchers have been able to measure and follow up digitalization through collaboration with the public sector. This year's survey involved 85 public organizations with more than 3,300 respondents, all of whom shared information on how they work with digitalization. Johan Magnusson and his colleagues then analyse the results and come up with suggestions for solutions and improvements.

–  I live under the idea that as a new professor my impact will be further strengthened. We will see if that holds true, he says.

PhD in Business Administration

Johan Magnusson defended his dissertation in business administration at the University of Gothenburg in 2012. In recent years, he has been active as a researcher, teacher, and Head of Division of Informatics at the Department of Applied IT, IT Faculty.

He is also one of the directors of the Swedish Center for Digital Innovation, SCDI, a research centre focusing on digital innovation that the University of Gothenburg runs together with Stockholm School of Economics and Umeå University.

– Our society is facing major challenges in the wake of digitalization. To succeed with digital transformation, there is a great need for research on digital innovation, says Johan Magnusson.
