Pollen season has started – how it affects you and what you can do

The blooming of alder (Alnus glutinosa) has begun in Gothenburg, marking the full onset of the pollen season. Daily pollen levels are expected to rise until the end of March, bringing potential discomfort for many allergy sufferers. Here’s what to expect – and how to best manage the season.

Weather plays a crucial role in how much pollen is dispersed in the air. Warmer temperatures and dry conditions often lead to higher pollen levels, while rain can temporarily reduce the amount in the air.
"When temperatures exceed 5°C, combined with moderate winds and low humidity, pollen levels can quickly reach moderate to high levels. This can cause increased discomfort for those with pollen allergies", says Nestor González Roldán, researcher at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and head of the Pollen Laboratory in Gothenburg.

In addition to alder, hazel (Corylus avellana) has also bloomed during the winter. Although its peak flowering period is over, local variations can still lead to moderate pollen levels.
"This means that people allergic to hazel may still experience symptoms depending on their location and weather conditions", says Nestor González Roldán.

How to alleviate symptoms

For those suffering from pollen allergies, this time of year can be challenging, but there are several ways to ease symptoms:

  • Follow daily pollen forecasts – plan outdoor activities based on current pollen levels.
  • Keep windows and doors closed – especially during periods of high pollen levels to minimize indoor exposure.
  • Shower and change clothes after being outside – this helps remove pollen from your skin and hair.
  • Use appropriate allergy medication – if needed, recommended by a healthcare provider, to relieve symptoms.

Those particularly sensitive may also consider wearing sunglasses outdoors to protect their eyes and investing in an air purifier for indoor environments.
