Record interest in R/V Skagerak

Published

An unusually large number of researchers at the University of Gothenburg have applied for subsidised time on board R/V Skagerak the next two years - with expeditions stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Faroe Islands. "This is a new record," says Niklas Andersson, project manager for R/V Skagerak.

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg can obtain subsidised ship time on board R/V Skagerak for various types of marine research projects. The University of Gothenburg is offering this opportunity to help strengthen marine research, and interest among researchers is growing.

This autumn, the university received a total of ten applications for a total of 100 days aboard R/V Skagerak for the years 2025 and 2026.

This shows that more and more researchers at the University of Gothenburg are discovering the fantastic opportunities R/V Skagerak has to offer marine research.

"We are very pleased about this. It shows that more and more researchers at the University of Gothenburg are discovering the fantastic opportunities R/V Skagerak has to offer marine research. We also believe that many have started to apply for subsidised ship time early in the research project funding process, which is positive," says Niklas Andersson.

Marine research in many fields

The applications will be submitted to the research committee (FOB) at the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Gothenburg, who will decide which applications will continue in the process.

"We hope that this will be a smooth process and that the researchers who have applied will receive a decision as soon as possible," says Niklas Andersson.

The current projects include research in marine biology, marine chemistry, oceanography and marine geology, and involve expeditions to areas in the Baltic Sea, the Faroe Islands and the west coast of Norway and Sweden.

"It will be very exciting to start planning soon," says Niklas Andersson.

There are other options for researchers at the University of Gothenburg who did not submit their applications by September this year.

"If you have missed this opportunity, we can investigate the possibility of you, as a researcher at the University of Gothenburg, joining an expedition as an additional passenger for another project. Please visit our website for information on how to contact us. You are always welcome, says Niklas Andersson.
