DIGICURE – Digital Cultural Resilience and Protection
Short description
As a result of Russian aggression, more than 460 sites of cultural significance have been deliberately and systematically destroyed in Ukraine. The destruction of heritage is a conscious action to erase history and weaken a people's connection with the past, paving way for appropriation and misinformation.
A challenge facing Ukraine and European allies after the war is rebuilding. As has been demonstrated in recent times, not least with the reconstruction of Notre Dame, having access to digital documentation of a high quality for rehabilitation and reconstruction of built heritage greatly elevates this burden.
Addressing this challenge for the Ukrainian heritage sector and aligning the sector with European policies and institutions, the project aims at carrying out training activities and establishing a Centre of Excellence in digital heritage documentation in Kyiv for critical data collection and publication of threatened cultural heritage.
The project's goals are:
1. Develop an education and training program for Ukrainian cultural heritage professionals where they get access to the training and capacity to independently carry out advanced documentation of cultural environments, analyze them, and make them available for the international community according to European FAIR data principles and standards.
2. Establish a Ukrainian Centre of Excellence in digital heritage documentation in Kyiv that functions as a node for knowledge transfer and network activity between cultural heritage professionals in Ukraine and Europe concerning digital documentation strategies and methods.
