Short description

Persons with severe psychiatric disorders demand to participate in their care and patient participation is required by Swedish law. In order to live up to the intention of the law, care givers need to develop interventions that promote patient participation. Self-admission is an intervention that allows patients themselves to decide when they need to be admitted to inpatient care and therefore promotes patient participation.

At date there is insufficient research regarding Self-admission and there seems to be no studies specifically addressing persons with psychosis and complex needs. These persons suffer from a chronic psychosis disorder with severe functional disabilities. As a consequence, they depend on care givers and social services to a great extent. Self-admission was introduced specifically for persons with psychosis and complex needs in 2015 at the Department of Psychotic Disorders, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden. The present study aims to evaluate the intervention. More specifically, we aim to investigate if the intervention is related to changes regarding consumption of inpatient care and occasions of involuntary treatment.
