Short description

This research project aims to deepen the understanding of how pregnancy and childbirth impact sexual health. Commissioned by the Public Health Agency of Sweden, a qualitative interview study is being conducted with individuals who have given birth within the past two years, exploring their experiences and perceptions of changes in sexual health. As a foundation for the interview study, a systematic literature review is also being carried out to map and analyse existing research on sexual health after pregnancy and childbirth. The overarching goal of the project is to contribute new knowledge that can improve postpartum care and promote sexual health

Background

Sexual health is a fundamental aspect of overall health, influencing physical and mental well-being as well as relationships. Following pregnancy and childbirth, individuals undergo significant physical, psychological, and social changes that can impact sexual health both positively and negatively.

Purpose and Research Questions

The primary aim of this research project is to gain deeper insight into how sexual health is affected by pregnancy and childbirth. Additionally, the study seeks to highlight how health-promoting measures can be tailored to address the unique needs of individuals who have recently given birth. The study is guided by the following research questions:

  • What existing scientific knowledge is available on how sexual health is affected by pregnancy and childbirth, and what knowledge gaps remain?
  • How do individuals who have given birth perceive changes in their sexual health compared to before pregnancy and childbirth?
  • What factors are experienced as limiting or enhancing sexual health after pregnancy and childbirth?
  • How is support from healthcare and society perceived in matters related to sexual health after childbirth?

Implementation

The project involves a systematic review and analysis of existing research, as well as a qualitative interview study with individuals who have recently given birth.
