Min forskning är inriktad på att bättre förstå och förklara sambanden mellan psykiska problem och sjukfrånvaro. Psykiska problem är ett av våra största folkhälsoproblem och påverkar enskilda människors livskvalitet men också ekonomi, arbete och vardagsliv i familj och bland vänner. Jag leder en forskargrupp, GendiQ, som i huvudsak sysslar med det som förkortningen står för:”Gendered inequalities in health and social security”. Jag är också huvudforskare (PI) för Hälsoresursprojektet, WAG (Women and alcohol in Gothenburg) och New Ways.
I Hälsoresursprojektet har vi bland annat undersökt sjukfrånvarons omfattning och fördelning i olika diagnosgrupper, studerat sambandet mellan alkoholvanor och sjukfrånvaro samt undersökt samband mellan organisationsklimat och personligt engagemang och sjukfrånvaro och återgång i arbete. Vi har vidare undersökt hur sambanden ser ut mellan nedsatt psykiskt välbefinnande, arbetsförmåga och återgång i arbete. Som en fortsättning på studierna i Hälsoresursprojektet har vi genom medel från forskningsrådet Forte startat ett större forskningsprogram som vi kallar “The New Ways program: identification, treatment and support for persons with common mental disorders to maintain their capacity to work.” Programmets huvudsakliga utgångspunkt och antagande är att flexibilitet på arbetsplatsen, tidig identifiering och behandling av de psykiska problemen i hälso- och sjukvården samt en tidigt insatt och anpassad rehabilitering kan stärka arbetsförmåga samt förebygga kort respektive lång sjukfrånvaro. Mot bakgrund av att förmågan att arbeta ligger till grund för försörjning, social tillhörighet och strukturer i vardagen är det viktigt att personer inte utesluts på grund av bristande kunskap (eller fördomar) bland chefer och arbetsledare om psykiska problem eller på grund av brister i sjukskrivnings- och rehabiliteringsprocessen.
WAG är ett longitudinellt projekt som startade i mitten av 1980-talet. I projektet intervjuas kvinnor om sin livssituation, psykiska hälsa och alkoholvanor. Intervjun är personlig och omfattar många olika aspekter av livet. Genom att projektet är longitudinellt (samma kvinnor har intervjuats vid flera tillfällen) kan vi dra slutsatser om orsakssamband. De första intervjuerna gjordes 1989/-90 med uppföljningar 1995, 2000 och 2013/-14. Vid varje uppföljningstillfälle har nya grupper av kvinnor bjudits in och totalt har vi baslinjeintervjuer med 1372 kvinnor. De äldsta kvinnorna i projektet är födda 1925 och de yngsta 1993. I WAG har vi studerat hur vanligt det är med alkoholproblem bland kvinnor, sambandet mellan tidiga sexuella övergrepp och alkoholproblem, samband mellan personlighet och alkoholproblem men också konsekvenser av riskkonsumtion av alkohol i form av sjukfrånvaro och förtidspension.
Ett genomgående intresse i min forskning är skillnader mellan kvinnor och män och betydelsen av genusstrukturer för kvinnors och mäns hälsa. I några studier har jag undersökt genusidentitet och alkoholvanor bland kvinnor, den horisontella segregeringen på arbetsmarknaden och hälsa samt hur kombinationen av betalt och obetalt arbete påverkar hälsa och sjukfrånvaro.
Jag är professor i socialmedicin, enhetschef vid enheten för socialmedicin och biträdande avdelningschef för avdelningen för samhällsmedicin och folkhälsa. Jag har uppdrag som ledamot i Fortes styrelse, Försäkringskassans vetenskapliga råd, Systembolagets forskningsråd och CAN:s styrelse. Mitt internationella samarbete koncentreras för närvarande till forskare vid Bergens universitet och Queen Mary University i London. Jag är vice president för sektionen för Social Security and Health i den europeiska folkhälsoorganisationen EUPHA och ledamot i sektionen för psykiatrisk epidemiologi och socialpsykiatri i den europeiska psykiatriorganisationen EPA.
