Background
Jeanette Olsson is a social worker and public health specialist. She has worked both in Sweden and internationally; withiin governmental organisations, NGOs and UN. Her key areas of expertise are psychosocial work with children and youth, HIV/AIDS and inernational public health.
Research area
The overall purpose of the research for the PHD is to explore the possibilities and barriers for children and young people that live on the street to reintegrate into the community. The study will be conducted in the Kagera region of Tanzania, focusing on street children from Bukoba town.
Children living on the streets are a major problem around the world and they are being denied most of their human rights. The reintegration process for children that have lived on the streets is an important, but neglected research area. The overall purpose of this research is to explore the possibilities and barriers for children and young people that work and/or live on the streets to reintegrate into the community. This project will be conducted in the Kagera region of Tanzania, focusing on street children from Bukoba town.
The specific aims are; • To identify the demographic, socio-economic, health and relational factors that contribute or hinder children and young people that have resorted to the streets to reintegrate into the society • To analyze the social situation and perceived health of children and young people before and after residing on the streets • To explore the concept of reintegration based on the experiences of the children and young people who have resorted to the street and returned to their local community
