About Maria Jarl

Maria Jarl is an assistant professor in education, Department of education and special education, University of Gothenburg. She holds her PhD in political science from the University of Gothenburg. She has previously been a visiting researcher at the Scandinavian Consortium for Organizational Research (Scancor), Stanford University. Jarl’s main research interests concern educational governance, educational reform, and educational effectiveness. She previously led the research project Organizing for school success (financed by the Swedish Research Council). She currently participates in research projects on educational governance focusing the role of objectives (financed by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond) and on leadership autonomy in Swedish, Finnish, and Icelandic municipalities and schools (financed by the Swedish Research Council). Jarl’s research appears, in selection, Public Administration, Journal of Educational Administration and History, and School Effectiveness and School Improvement.

In addition to research, Jarl has served as an expert in such organizations as The Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions and The Swedish National Agency for Education, and she has been the advisor to the Ministry of Education. Jarl also held several leadership positions in teacher education, at the University of Gothenburg and nationally.
