PhD programme at Universidad Mayor de San Simón (UMSS) in Bolivia
In collaboration with the Universidad Mayor de San Simón (UMSS) in Cochabamba, Bolivia, the School of Global Studies (SGS) has established a new interdisciplinary PhD programme in social sciences.
The programme is one of several collaborative sub-programmes in Bolivia that are funded by SIDA (The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency), and focuses on several of the School of Global Studies’ expert areas, such as sustainability, development, civil society and indigenous issues.
The SGS-UMSS collaboration aims to strengthen and qualify social sciences and humanities research at the UMSS and will train ten researchers in Bolivia between 2021 and 2025. The aim is further to provide the foundation for high-quality research oriented graduate programmes and also to provide, in this period of crisis and social transformation, with relevant knowledge and proposals, to public institutions, civil society and economic agents, aimed at the reduction of poverty in Bolivia. The programme will be implemented between 2021 and 2025, in coordination with a master's programme and with the creation of a data platform to be used by researchers and development actors. For its implementation, UMSS has a significant number of researchers with PhD degrees in social sciences and humanities in ten research centers.
SGS will contribute mainly by providing its experience in the development of collaborative graduate programmes, the expertise of its academic staff, supervision and teaching, facilities during visits to Sweden, and access to specialized information and inter-institutional contacts.
The coordinating entity is the International Science Programme (ISP) at Uppsala University, and more information about the overall programme is provided on this link.
