Collaboration with Region Västra Götaland

Region Västra Götaland is responsible not only for proving healthcare at the Sahlgrenska university hospital, but also for opening up the healthcare infrastructure to life science research and development in close collaboration with the university of Gothenburg.

Moreover, the region also has a political assignment to stimulate industrial development and growth in West Sweden.

With the forming of wcmtm, the region also decided to contribute significantly to further strengthen translational life science research. Half of the WCMTM fellows are clinical researchers combining their science with clinical work, benefiting from being in the intersection between the experimental and clinical.

The center was established in collaboration between the KAW Foundation, University of Gothenburg, Region Västra Götaland (Sahlgrenska University Hospital), and AstraZeneca - creating research environments in the interface between academia, health care and the pharmaceutical industry.

Clinical Research Group Leaders

In addition to the associate professorship with a career package, WCMTM also recruits clinical research group leaders at Sahlgrenska University Hospital for positions with 50% research time and affiliation with institutions at Sahlgrenska Academy. They receive a career package with funding for two staff members (postdocs, doctoral students, or equivalent) and operational funds for four years.

Access to Biobank

Another important initiative within WCMTM and VGR collaboration, is to facilitate the forming of new biobanks and access to existing biobanks for liquid biopsies. Together with Biobank West and the department of Pathology, WCMTM will also participate in the forming of tissue biobanking within VGR.

The Translational Genomics Platform

The Translational Genomics Platform, funded by the Västra Götaland Region/Regional Development and initiated by WCMTM in 2017, has evolved into a hub within WCMTM by combining the research interests of several group leaders.
