The University launches a Master's Program in Applied Biostatistics

Published

This up-coming fall, the first class of students will begin the new Master's Program in Applied Biostatistics at Sahlgrenska Academy. International students can already apply for the program, which will be held at the Health Sciences Center at Wavrinskys Plats.

In the rapidly developing field of Life Sciences, there is a growing demand for biostatisticians, professionals who can match research questions with an appropriate study design, data collection and analysis.

Focus on application

The program starts in the fall of 2025, and the application process is already open for international students. The Master's Program is taught in English and provides an understanding of the theoretical foundations of statistical methods and their impact on practical data analysis. The focus is on applications, giving students the opportunity to use biostatistics in real-world projects alongside experienced statisticians. The Master's Program in Gothenburg will complement the program offered in Stockholm, which has a more theoretical focus.

"The students will work hands-on, implementing biostatistical methods. They may come from diverse backgrounds such as medicine, health sciences, natural sciences, economics, or engineering. We imagine they enjoy programming and have an interest in life science research," says Barbora Kessel, senior lecturer in health science statistics and the program's director.

Learning from Akademistatistik

The Master's Program prepares students for all aspects of a biostatistician's role. It is closely connected with Akademistatistik, which provides statistical and health economics consulting to around 200 researchers at the university and within the Västra Götaland region each year.

"Students will have the opportunity to participate in statistical consultations conducted by members of Akademistatistik and experience the real work of an applied biostatistician. This includes data handling, presenting results, and critically evaluating methods and the conclusions that can be drawn from their application," says Barbora Kessel.

In addition to gaining a solid understanding of modern biostatistical methods and their applications, students will also learn programming in R, as well as the basics of AI and machine learning. Barbora Kessel notes that students will thrive if they have an interest in mathematics and a desire to learn more. The program begins with an introduction to biostatistics, reinforcing the mathematical skills students need for the rest of their education.

Broad opportunities

After completing the program, students will have a challenging, varied, and exciting career ahead of them. The degree can lead to jobs as statistical consultants in research projects or as researchers in the pharmaceutical industry. It also provides a solid foundation for further research in Life Sciences and biostatistical methodology.
Above all, the education is the start of a lifelong learning journey.

"Data analysis methods are constantly evolving, and a biostatistician is never fully trained. The Master's Program provides a foundation that enables continuous learning and participation in the development of necessary methods," says Barbora Kessel.
