Short description

Quality indicators in health care provide measurable ways to assess and improve the quality of care provided to patients, where there has been a growing request for quality indicators which measures person-centered care. To arrive at a consensus surrounding what quality indicators are of relevance to health care professionals when evaluating person-centered care, the Delphi method will be used. The study will consist of a pilot study, and four sequential questionnaire rounds. The project is carried out in close collaboration between representatives from regions, municipalities, and patient representatives, providing a broad platform to ensure that the indicators cover the health system processes relevant to patients and their relatives.

Background

Quality indicators in health care provide measurable ways to assess and improve the quality of care provided to patients, and are a part of creating knowledge driven management within the Swedish healthcare system. Quality indicators provide healthcare organizations with data-driven insights on areas to improve and track progress, hold healthcare units and authorities accountable for the quality of the care they provide, allows for historical comparison and as comparison between health care units and authorities, as well as highlight areas of underperformance and guide the allocation of recourses to improve healthcare quality.

Previous research on quality indicators in health care has focused on several areas, such as patient safety, care timeliness and effectiveness, staff well-being and patient centered outcomes, with growing request for quality indicators which measures person-centered care. Despite there being quality indicators currently measuring person-centered care, they either focus on specific diagnosis, measures only a part of person-centered care, has not included the European standard for patient involvement, or has not included indicators found in previous research.

The use of quality indicators is currently fragmented, with a lack of consensus on which quality indicators measure person-centered care.

Identifying and developing indicators based on previous research and the standard for patient involvement with a focus on a broad perspective would inform decision makers on how to improve person-centered care, and where to direct recourses.

Purpose

To identify and develop quality indicators for person-centered care, creating the possibility for evaluating person centeredness in the healthcare system.

Goals

The goal of the project is to identify and develop quality indicators for person-centered care which provides the possibility to evaluate person-centeredness in the health care system. The ability to evaluate person-centered care will provide the opertunity for decision-makers to allocate recorces towards areas in need of improvement.

Results

There are currently no results to present, but our hope is to be able to provide preliminary results during the spring of 2025.
