Profile Area UGOT Ocean
UGOT Ocean is a profile area at the University of Gothenburg focusing on tackling today's urgent ocean sustainability challenges.
The vision is to advance transformative governance and management to foster innovative and sustainable use of ocean resources. The vision is achieve through research excellence and a multidisciplinary approach. The profile area closely aligns with the UN Decade of Ocean Science, aiming to provide "the science we need for the ocean we want".
Broad Collaboration Across the University
UGOT Ocean brings together 350 ocean-related research staff from all seven faculties at the University of Gothenburg. The University also host key marine infrastructures, including the Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, the Kristineberg Center for Marine Research and Innovation, and the research vessel R/V Skagerak.
Through citizen science, ocean literacy, and close cooperation with stakeholders, the profile area aim to ensure that our research leads to impactful societal changes.
Research Themes
The profile area encompasses three main research themes, each integrating multiple disciplines across the university.

Global Ocean Change & Resilience: Investigating how the ocean responds to climate change and other stressors, including polar and climate science, marine ecosystem adaptations, and biogeochemical cycles.

Transformative Ocean Governance & Management: Addressing institutional, economic, and social aspects of ocean governance, and exploring ways to promote equitable and effective governance practices for sustainable ocean use.

Innovative & Sustainable Ocean Use: Fostering sustainable approaches to marine aquaculture, the blue economy, and participatory research to support a healthy relationship between humanity and the ocean.
Profile Areas at University of Gothenburg
On 17 Novembrer 2022 the vice chancellor at the University of Gothenburg approved the proposal for five profile areas for the University, in connection with the application for the Swedish Research Council’s call for Profile Areas.
The five area are:
- A Sustainable Digital Society
- Age-related disease and therapy development
- Cultural Heritage and Sustainability: towards an integrated approach
- Molecular Life Science
- UGOT Ocean
The areas were selected based on research excellency, potential for quality, and societal collaboration.
Although the Swedish Research Council's call regarding profile areas was postponed by the government in 2023, the University of Gothenburg allocated a consolidation grant to further develop each respective area. In 2024, the Faculty of Science identified Ocean Sciences as one of its thematic focus areas, aligning its efforts with the UGOT Ocean profile.
