Pedagogical Experiences of and Strategies for Handling Antisemitism in Schools
Project manager: Christer Mattsson
Funded by the Swedish Research Council. SEK 6 million, 2024-2027.
Anti-Semitism poses a particularly difficult challenge for schools and can create conflictual and difficult-to-manage teaching situations. This project aims to shed light on teachers' and students' experiences of anti-Semitism in teaching and other school activities, and to analyze the school's strategies for addressing and countering anti-Semitism.
Although quantitative studies have shown the prevalence of the problem, there is a lack of more in-depth research that provides insight into how and when antisemitism manifests itself and how it can be successfully addressed. This project explores:
- How school management and student health staff describe their experiences of antisemitism and strategies to address it.
- Teachers' experiences of antisemitism in education and their pedagogical strategies.
- Pupils' experiences of antisemitism and their views on school efforts to address the problem.
Societal relevance
The project aims to strengthen the school's ability to be inclusive and promote democracy. By shedding light on how anti-Semitism manifests itself in schools and what strategies are used to address it, the project contributes with valuable knowledge that can support teachers and school staff in their work for a safe and inclusive school environment.
