Raising awareness of antisemitism in Sweden

In order to prevent and respond to antisemitism, we need to understand the ideas, expressions and consequences of antisemitism. This need has become evident after the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, the subsequent war in Gaza, demonstrations in Sweden and discussions on social media. Therefore, the Segerstedt Institute at the University of Gothenburg has initiated a research effort in 2024 that we call "Knowledge boost on anti-Semitism in Sweden".

The research we are conducting serves two main purposes. The first purpose is to create an empirical, systematic and research-based basis on the prevalence and consequences of antisemitism for Jews in Sweden after the terrorist attack on 7/10. Our ambition is to contribute to the debate on antisemitism in Sweden moving from the anecdote stage to a conversation based on systematically produced knowledge. The second aim is to translate this knowledge into a resource for Swedish teachers. This is done by integrating the research effort into the method development support offered by the Segerstedt Institute to municipalities and other education coordinators from 2024. We know that it is difficult to discuss and deal with issues related to anti-Semitism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the classroom and this effort aims to develop this ability.

The research project is led by Christer Mattsson and Robin Andersson Malmros, both active at the Segerstedt Institute, and consists of six sub-studies. Other participating researchers are Anders Persson (Linnaeus University), Isabella Pistone (University of Gothenburg), Mirjam Katzin (University of Gothenburg), Morten Sager (University of Gothenburg), Pontus Rudberg (Uppsala University) and Thomas Johansson (University of Gothenburg).
