Making a difference: Johanna wants to support youth in Gothenburg

Johanna Lithner is studying in the Master's Programme in Social Work and Human Rights. Her interest in the human rights perspective and the opportunity to combine her knowledge with social work practice led her to choose the programme. “One of my favourite things are how incredibly sharp our teachers are.”, Johanna says.

Hi Johanna! You are a student in the human rights and social work programme. Why did you choose this programme?

I chose this program initially because I was interested in the human rights perspective on social work and also because I was interested in deepening my knowledge and how that can intersect with social work practice.

What do you like most about the Master's in Social Work and Human Rights?

There have been a lot of good things about this program so far. I think one of my favourite things have been just the lectures that we've had and just how knowledgeable and incredibly sharp our teachers are.

Have you learnt any new skills that are useful to you?

I think the most valuable thing and lesson that I've learned so far is just how complex social issues are. Just the fact that, like everything is influenced by each other, they're all intertwined. We shouldn't be able to stick our head into the sand and just say like, “you know what? That thing does not affect us”. Because every single thing and choice that we make here has a ripple effect all over the world, really. And that has been really interesting.

What are your plans after graduation?

Straight after I graduate, I will be working at a school in a multicultural area here in Gothenburg, working with youth and children who don't really have the same opportunities as others. So my hope and my dream for the future is to find a place to work with that.
