About Elena Volodina

I am an Associate Professor (‘Docent’ in Swedish) and an active researcher at Språkbanken Text (SBX) at the Department of Swedish, Multilingualism, Language Technology, where I have been working since 2010. My focus area of research is Natural Language Processing (NLP) for Swedish as a second language (L2 Swedish), including directions such as automatic exercise generation, readability classification, linguistic complexity classification, grammatical error detection and correction.

Apart from research proper, I have been actively involved in building research infrastructure, primarily aimed at Language Technology research in the field of L2 Swedish. Among such resources are two SweLL corpora of learner essays, Swedish Second Language Profile, Swedish Morpheme/Word Family resource, DaLAJ for linguistic acceptability judgments, MultiGED datasets for the multilingual shared task on learner language where; learning platform Lärka, and many others.

To profile my area of research internationally, I have started a series of workshops on NLP for Computer-Assisted Language Learning (NLP4CALL), that I have been organizing (and co-organizing) annually since 2012 and that are well attended by researchers worldwide. I am currently coordinating an international group, Computational SLA, that promotes multilingual shared tasks on second language data (e.g. MultiGED-2023, MultiGEC-2025).

My competence includes English linguistics (PhD), Language Technology (Docentship & MA) and Language Teacher education (5-year specialist program).
