About Monica Reichenberg

Research interests My research area involves reading, primarily reading comprehension. My research questions are: How can texts be made comprehensible to readers? How can readers’ reading strategies be developed? Moreover, second-language reading has also be an object of my research.

In my dissertation (2000) I investigated 833 students’ comprehension of various text versions in history and social studies. After that I carried out intervention studies with students in 7th and 10th grade with the aim of determining to what extent structured text discussions about textbook passages could be a tool for students to create meaning in what they read.

At present I am pursuing a similar study with students in 5th grade. I have also made a study with the aim of examining comprehension of simple texts containing societal information among people who have been deaf since childhood.

Teaching interests I teach and supervise about reading and what research has to say today about dyslexia, reading and writing difficulties, and textbook analysis.
