About Ewa-Lena Bratt

Ewa-Lena Bratt is a professor of nursing, specializing in transitions within healthcare, with a particular focus on young people with chronic conditions. She is a registered nurse with specialized training in pediatric healthcare and has over 30 years of experience working in pediatric care, primarily with children and adolescents with congenital heart diseases.

Research Focus

Ewa-Lena leads the research group “Care Transitions in Healthcare,” which focuses on improving care for patients during transitions between different levels of care and healthcare providers. She is also one of the leading researchers in the national research project Stepstones, which aims to develop and evaluate person-centered transition programs. As part of this project, process evaluations and health economic analyses have been conducted. The Stepstones program is now being implemented in several hospitals across Sweden and includes the following subprojects:

  • Stepstones – Congenital Heart Disease
  • Stepstones – Diabetes
  • Stepstones – Implementation
  • Stepstones – Long-term Follow-up
  • Digi-Stepstones

In addition to Stepstones, Ewa-Lena also leads the collaborative project Adole7C (Adolescents Receiving Continuous Care for Childhood-onset Chronic Conditions). She also maintains active research collaborations with researchers from the University of Gothenburg, KU Leuven in Belgium, and Cape Town in South Africa.

Internationalization

As Vice Dean for Internationalization and Collaboration at the Sahlgrenska Academy, Ewa-Lena actively works to strengthen international partnerships and exchanges. She is a member of several key committees related to research education and research, including FUS (Doctoral Education Committee) and FOS (Research Committee). Since May 2024, she has been an Honorary Professor at the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Cape Town, South Africa

Teaching

Ewa-Lena teaches and supervises at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. She plays a central role in developing teaching methods to integrate international nursing students into the course on complex care situations, which strengthens the global aspect of the nursing program at the Sahlgrenska academy, University of Gothenburg.

Clinical Practice

Since 1998, Ewa-Lena has worked clinically with children and adolescents with congenital heart defects. Her professorship is combined with a position as a specialist nurse (20%) at the Pediatric Heart Center, Queen Silvia's Children's Hospital, Sahlgrenska University Hospital. In December 2021, she was also appointed as Consultant University Hospital Nurse at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
