Organization and management

Sahlgrenska Academy's activities - education, postgraduate training and research - are organized and carried out by the six departments, several center formations and the two units within the faculty.

This is how the faculty is governed

Sahlgrenska Academy is the medical faculty and one of eight faculties at the University of Gothenburg. The faculty is led by a dean, who is responsible for the faculty's activities vis-à-vis the rector. The dean is supported by a deputy dean and five vice deans with specific areas of responsibility.

The faculty's activities are carried out at the six institutes which are led by a head of institute.

In addition to the departments, there are two units that report to the faculty board and the dean:

Faculty Board

The faculty board is responsible for strategic planning and overall management of the activities within Sahlgrenska Academy. The faculty board consists of thirteen members, three of whom are student representatives.

The Head of Institutes' Council

The faculty's head of institutes council consists of the dean, vice dean, heads of institute, managers and representatives for the students. The head of institutes' council is tasked with advising the dean, for example, regarding the basis for the faculty board's decision.

The council of Sahlgrenska Academy

Within the academy there are eight joint faculty councils. The council prepares matters within its area for the faculty board and/or the dean and may be given certain decision-making rights on delegation from the dean.

  • The Council for Research
  • The Council for Postgraduate Education
  • The Education Council
  • The Council for Internationalization
  • The Council for the Recruitment of Teachers
  • The Council for Premises
  • The Environment Council
  • The Council for Research Ethics
