Gender, green transition and green jobs

The green transition in working life is a high priority for both the business sector and political actors. But how are the social dimensions of green jobs being addressed, related to gender and other factors?

Green jobs are typically defined as work focused on preserving or restoring environmental values. In the green transition of working life, more jobs are expected to become green, with a particular emphasis on various industrial initiatives aimed at achieving this. But which competencies are in demand, and which are not?

Discussions often center on science and technology education and professions—fields that are gendered as masculine and where men constitute the majority. Are there other types of work crucial for a sustainable societal transformation, which are less frequently highlighted in discussions about the green transition?

The project will produce a research overview based on a systematic literature review and an analysis of reports from international and intergovernmental organizations such as the ILO, OECD, and EU,* as well as national and regional actors in Sweden and the Nordic countries. The aim is to contribute with gender analyses of the issues surrounding green jobs and the green transition in working life.

Project period: January-December 2025

Target groups: Policymakers, researchers and organizations working on the green transition

We cooperate with:
Researchers and other experts in Sweden and the rest of the Nordic region

* The abbreviation ILO stands for International Labour Organization, OECD for Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and EU for is the European Union.
