Thomas Hillman är professor i tillämpad IT med inriktning mot utbildningsvetenskap. Hans intressen rör främst förhållandet mellan digitalisering och vetande. Thomas forskning syftar till att förstå förändringar i hur vi lär oss när teknologier förvandlar hur vi producerar, får tillgång till och arbetar med kunskap. Hans aktuella forskning undersöker kunskapsprocesser i digitala plattformar som används av miljontals människor. Lärande i dessa plattformar präglas av teknikens utformning och den praxis som utvecklas när tekniken används. Han undersöker plattformar i många olika sammanhang allt från de sociala medier som används av människor som vill diskutera ett ämne till de plattformar som används i skolor för att organisera lärares och elevers arbete. I varje sammanhang förändras förutsättningarna för lärande i takt med att tekniken förändras och med dessa förändringar uppstår nya möjligheter och problem. Detaljerna i hur vi utformar och använder digitala plattformar gör skillnaden mellan att till exempel öka tillgänglighet till kunskap eller skapa mer ojämlikhet. Med ökad användning av digitala plattformar och automatisering genom artificiell intelligens växer behovet av forskning som kan förbättra utformandet, tillämpningen och användningen av olika teknologier som används för lärande.
Thomas har en yrkesbakgrund som industri- och interaktionsdesigner och disputerade 2011 vid University of Ottawa i Kanada på en avhandling om den cykel av ständig design och omdesign genom vilken utbildningsteknologier formar och formas av lärandeprocesser. Han kom till Utbildningsvetenskapliga fakulteten vid Göteborgs universitet som postdoktor och har varit gästforskare vid Oxford Internet Institute vid University of Oxford. Sedan 2019 är han anställd vid Institutionen för tillämpad informationsteknologi där han är professor och proprefekt.
