Thomas Hillman är professor i tillämpad IT med inriktning mor utbildningsvetenskap och proprefekt med ansvar för forskning vid Institutionen för tillämpad informationsteknologi. Hans huvudfokus ligger på sambandet mellan digitalisering och kunskap, och han medledare av CREDtech, Centrum för ansvarsfull utbildningsteknologi.
Thomas forskning syftar till att förstå hur teknologisk förändring påverkar lärandet och kunande, särskilt hur vi producerar, får tillgång till och arbetar med kunskap. Detta studeras genom att undersöka kunskapsprocesser med de digitala infrastrukturer som används av miljontals människor i vardagen. Lärande med dessa infrastrukturer formas både av teknikens design och av de metoder som utvecklas under användningen. Thomas utforskar digitala kunskapsinfrastrukturer i olika sammanhang, från sociala medier där individer diskuterar ämnen till plattformar i skolor som organiserar lärare och elevers aktiviteter. I varje miljö förändrar teknologisk förändring förutsättningarna för lärande, vilket skapar både nya möjligheter och utmaningar. Hur digitala infrastrukturer designas och används kan antingen öka tillgången till kunskap eller fördjupa ojämlikheter. När artificiell intelligens automatiserar fler processer blir det ännu viktigare att forska om hur man förbättrar designen, tillämpningen och användningen av utbildningsteknologier.
Thomas har en professionell bakgrund inom industriell och interaktionsdesign och disputerade 2011 vid University of Ottawa med en avhandling om cykeln av kontinuerlig design och omarbetning, genom vilken utbildningsteknologier formar och formas av lärandeprocesser. Han började på Fakulteten för utbildning vid Göteborgs universitet som postdoktoral forskare och har varit gästforskare vid Oxford Internet Institute vid University of Oxford. Sedan 2019 är han anställd vid Institutionen för tillämpad informationsteknologi.

Jag handleder studenter med intressen inom områden som lärande i storskaliga onlinemiljöer, digital kunskapsinfrastrukturer och människocentrerad artificiell intelligens. Alla förfrågningar om handledning på kandidat- eller masternivå bör gå via kursansvarig för examensarbeteskursen inom det relevanta programmet.
