About Annika Bergström

I took my PhD in Journalism, Media and Communication in 2005. The thesis focused on news consumption practices in the Swedish population between 1998 and 2003.

Since 2005, I’ve been working as a researcher and lecturer at JMG, as a research administrator and deputy head at the SOM Institute, as deputy head of JMG and from the Fall 2023 as director of the SOM Institute..

My research has mainly focused on the use of digital media and the transformation from analogue to digital media from a user perspective.

Research Areas

My main research interest is in audience research. Media use, and particularly use of news media in a longitudinal perspective is the core of my research projects. Related to use, I’m also interested in how media habits change when new media, new platforms and new actors enter the news media landscape. Associated with news in digital media, is also user participation, and I have studied use of commentary fields and news use in social media over the years. In cooperation with research center Agecap I have conducted studies on the digital divide and older adults engagement with the Internet. I also have a large interest in survey methodology, more specifically how to measure media consumption in the contemporary media landscape.

Current Research Project

At the SOM Institute, I'm engaged in methodological issues regarding survey measures of news consumption practices in population studies.

Teaching

I only do a small amount of teaching. Mainly, I teach on undergraduate level and supervise doctoral students.
