Meet our alumni

Our alumni have marine careers in fields ranging from marine technology development and numerical modelling to environmental monitoring and mussel farming. Here you can meet some of our alumni who have completed one - or more ! - of our marine programmes at the Department of Marine Sciences.

Sophia and Rikard are marine environmental specialists

Sophia Hallberg and Rikard Karlsson are marine environmental specialists working with offshore renewable energy at the Nordic wind energy company Zephyr. They both studied the Bachelor's programme in Marine Science.

"We work with everything from analysing sediment cores from the ocean floor to investigate the presence of contaminants, to inventorying the presence of porpoises in the area," says Sophia Hallberg.

Simon Pliscovaz works at SMHI

Simon Pliscovaz first studied the Bachelor's programme in Marine Science with a specialisation in oceanography and then a Master's in Physical Oceanography. In his work at SMHI, he works with everything from weather warnings to modelling.

"I understand much more about the programme now when I get to use the knowledge I have gained," says Simon Pliscovaz.

Alexandra Falk works as an environmental analyst

Alexandra Falk first studied the Bachelor's programme in Marine Science with a specialisation in Biology and then the Master's programme in Sea and Society. She always knew she wanted to work with the environment in some way.

Now she works with national and regional environmental monitoring as an environmental analyst at the Coastal Laboratory in Lysekil, including sample fishing to assess ecosystems on the west coast.

Amanda Dahl works with aquaculture and fisheries

Amanda Dahl got the job as a county fisheries consultant at the County Administrative Board thanks to her thesis on the strategy for future fisheries on the Master's programme in Sea and Society.

"Right now, I'm a bit hooked on aquaculture. It's an exciting area that's developing all the time with both farming and many research projects on, for example, algae and oysters."

Sebastian Packalén work with ballast water treatment system

After graduating from the Master's programme in Sea and Society, Sebastian Packalén got a job as a product specialist at Alfa Laval. He is working on a purification system that prevents the spread of invasive species by ships - a job where he can combine his interests in technology and the marine environment.

"The knowledge I gained from Sea and Society has enabled me to link the technical aspects with the issue of shipping regulations."
