Test- and instrument construction for educational research, 7.5 credits
The course is about what characterizes quality measurements and how they are constructed. This is an important area since a large part of research in the field of education is based on information from some form of measurement. These can be pre- and post-measurements in classroom interventions, mapping in schools or workplaces, use of data from international studies, and/or collection of background information aimed at supplementing other data.
At the start of the course, an orientation on the characteristics of different types of instruments, such as knowledge proficiency, aptitude tests, assessment forms, attitude measurements, self-estimates and self-reports of other phenomena, and concepts that along with background factors are measured through surveys. Thereafter, the focus shifts to instrument construction and students are provided with insight on the instrument that is most relevant to them. Aspects of the design process that should be given particular attention in order to ensure and protect validity will be emphasized.
