About John Chaplin

John Chaplin is an Associate Professor and Health Psychologist working in the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, and the Swedish Assoc. Local Authorities and Regions. He received his training at Warwick, Cranfield and City of London Universities. He has extensive experience in the development and assessment of patient reported outcome measurement (PROM) for child and adult health.

He has worked on a multinational basis and has worked with the European Union on issues of quality-of-life in children in the DISABKIDS and Kidscreen projects and led a European group investigating the empowerment of children and families in relation to participation in clinical trials following the EU Paediatric Regulation. He has worked with different medical conditions and was made an Ambassador for Epilepsy by the International Society Against Epilepsy. He has supervised post-graduate students to PhD level in Sweden, China and Germany.

He is currently leading two projects, one at the centre for Person Centred Care in Gothenburg concerning the development of a toolbox of instruments to aid health-care staff evaluate their health-care provision according to the principles of a person centred care approach. The second project is the translation and implementation of a patient reported outcome system (PROM) for implementation into the Swedish healthcare system and health care registries. This involves contact with projects throughout Sweden concerning validation and implementation of the system.

He lectures on the Global and Public Health at Gothenburg University on statistics and health research and supervises medical and public health students at the Sahgrenska Academy. He has been a member of the International Society of Quality of Life (ISOQOL) for many years and is the current chair of the Child-Special Interest Group. He is the PROMIS National Coordinator (PNC) for Sweden, chairman of the International PROMIS National Coordinators’ committee and was elected to the PROMIS Health Organisation steering committee in 2019. He is also a member of the ICHOM Overall Adult and Paediatric Health Steering Committees.

John Chaplin has published 74 articles on quality of life measurement in peer-reviewed journals, published a book on patient empowerment in clinical trials and contributed several chapters on quality of life issues to other publications. He is also an assistant editor of the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health and has contributed to advisory boards and scientific committees.
