We welcome both course leaders with their university students as well as teachers with their high school students. Here, we have listed some information that is good to know before your visit.

General bookings

Food and lodging as well as lecture halls, laboratories and other facilities are booked at the reception. If you have not yet booked, please apply for a place on this page (choose the form for "Teachers/leaders").
In order to facilitate the kitchen's planning, it is important that you inform us as soon as possible about any allergies and food preferences among the course participants.

Check-in and check-out

Check-in is normally at 15.00. Check-out is no later than 11.00 on the day of departure.

Laboratory work

We are concerned about safety and the environment. Please contact the laboratory manager to book a review of procedures and rules for laboratory work.

Vessels

The station's ship Nereus is booked at the reception. Nereus is often busy, so be sure to book well in advance.

In order to minimise wear and tear on the seabed, we can offer a live broadcast of life on the seabed on board Nereus, using cameras and a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV). Contact the reception for more information on this environmentally friendly alternative to bottom scraping.
Read more about our remotely operated underwater vehicles.

Small boats

Courses at the station have access to three small boats (4.5 metres) with outboard engines. In order to operate these, a driver's permit is required, which is given by the workshop staff.

The station also has three rowing boats that can be used by courses and visiting researchers. The use of these boats requires a short briefing by the workshop staff.

Small boats, driver training and rowing boat briefings are booked with the small boat manager.

Snorkelling and freediving

Snorkelling equipment can be borrowed from the Diving facility. There you will also find an information board with rules for snorkelling and freediving. Special rules apply to diving. If diving is relevant, the station's diving activity supervisor should always be contacted first.

Risk assessment

From 20 October to 31 May, a simple risk assessment (pdf) must be carried out for all field work, including snorkelling. Field work outside the "small boat area" (see the station's chart) or working alone must be risk assessed all year round.

If you have any questions, please contact the small boat manager or station coordinator.

Internet access

The station has the Eduroam wireless network. Contact the reception if you cannot log in, to get a password for the University of Gothenburg's guest account.

As a course leader, you are responsible for ensuring that students follow the station's procedures for waste and recycling.

Communications

There is no kiosk or shop on Tjärnö. Västtrafik runs a bus at certain times to and from Strömstad. For more information see:

Tjärnö Laboratory has a passenger van that can be used, for example, to pick up arriving students at the railway station in Strömstad. The bus is booked by teachers, contact the reception for more information.

Crisis management group

On evenings and weekends there are no staff at the station. If something serious happens that cannot wait, contact someone in the station's crisis management group. Information on the crisis management team can be found on the "green posters" posted in several places in the station.
